The Mastery Reps: When sh*t gets easy, go harder.

You want to be great.

I doubt you want to stay “average”.

I don’t mean this in the Andrew Tate way. As a matter of fact, if you want to work an office job, blue collar job, in medical field, etc, I know personally that there isn’t a problem with that.

When I say don’t be “average”, I mean to strive to be better.

When I say strive to be better, I mean to not become complacent.

And when I say to not become complacent, I mean when shit gets easy, go harder.

It’s common to find a routine. In fact, I would say it is actually optimal if you’re able to fully settle into a productive routine.

The thing is though that sometimes following those same routines long enough leads to complacency.

The problem though doesn’t stem from a routine itself (for the most part). Instead, it stems from you.

So what is complacency?

Complacency is the feeling of over-satisfaction towards your accomplishments.

See, it is important to celebrate your victories. As a matter of fact, I recommend you do so. Because there’s a difference between being lazy, and simply stopping to smell the roses.

However, don’t forget that you still need to maintain the garden.

If you plant a bunch of seeds, and a year of dedicated labor later they each bear fruits, there is no problem with you enjoying the fruits of your labor.

But if afterwards you end up leaving the garden unattended expecting it to bear fruits once again with simply watering them, then your own complacency will be the downfall of your garden.

Remember that they are no longer just seeds, but instead fully grown plants and flowers that require more thought and care because of the new vulnerability of pests, diseases, etc.

And you see, complacency doesn’t always mean immediate losses.

Sticking with the garden analogy- complacency can simply start off as a few abnormalities in the fruit. Nothing crazy.

Next blooming season though, you realize that not only do more fruits have abnormalities, but you’re also ending up with less fruits. Till eventually the following blooming season, you’re only left with a few bad fruits.

It is crucial for us as humans to continuously put in effort.

And the reason being is because we humans are always seeking improvement, which commonly comes in the form of physical betterment, more knowledge and skills, and more than likely more money.

But the even BIGGER reason is the fact that we are all in a race against time.

We all will reach an eventual age where our health will start declining, and so before then the best thing you want to have is an optimal base and foundation for as many aspects of your life as possible:

  • Physical

  • Mental

  • Spiritual

  • Financial

But even before you get to that old age, you still have to make sure that you’re consistently putting in reps or else you’ll lose your results and in turn that foundation even faster than originally expected.

Let’s say you workout for a year and end up getting in the BEST SHAPE OF YOUR LIFE. If you start taking your foot off the gas, over time you will begin to lose muscle. And depending on your diet, you may even begin to put some fluff on your body.

And the thing about reality is that everything is connected.

So while you start to see this physical decline in the mirror, you will also start experiencing a mental decline as well. As time progresses, your insecurities and lack of confidence will begin to start showing up in the workplace. You’ll begin to feel sadder, angrier, more stressed, maybe even begin to feel depressed.

All because you didn’t to continue putting in the work.

Think about it this way:

You’re on the freeway. Been driving for about 30 minutes, no cars in sight and you’ve been going directly straight the entire time. The complacency in you says “I can relax my eyes now”. You close your eyes shut.

But why not? It’s been a completely straight, empty road the entire 30 minutes.

What if a car goes onto the freeway? Sure, depending on which lane their in it may not be a problem. Very true. But then- eight other cars come in, each going at different speeds and split into different lanes.

Are you sure you want to keep your eyes closed?

The thing with complacency is that it sets in when you mistake success for stability.

Complacency assumes that things will remain the same. It doesn’t think about possible changes or risks that life can throw.

And so you have to realize that lack of awareness KILLS.

Life isn’t just “go from point A to point B.” Yes, your goals can be about getting from point A to point B, but what about your livelihood? Your health? Your relationships?

Because if you only focus on climbing the mountain peak, and FINALLY!! YOU REACHED THE PEAK!!

But you’ve now thrown away your climbing gear- you’ve abandoned what even got you to the mountain peak in the first place. The discipline, the habits, the work ethic and sacrifices you had to put in.

You then decided to set camp at the top- but you forgot that storms can still rise above the clouds and put you in danger. You believe that because you’ve reached the highest high that another low isn’t possible anymore, which only gives room to invite decline.

But that doesn’t matter to you! You only care about the view at the top! It’s so awesome isn’t it- but you’re so mesmerized by the view that you don’t even realize that the ground beneath you is slowly eroding and crumbling away. You forget that staying in the same spot, practicing inaction, is only wasting time and further increasing your vulnerability towards failure.

I’m not telling you that you should strive to be a millionaire. Everyone has their own goals, dreams, and aspirations. But we all have to keep improving.

Self-mastery isn’t about “YOU HAVE TO BE PERFECT MOTHAFUCKA”.

nah.

Self-mastery is about continuously seeking to learn, grow, and improve.

Because let’s face it- perfection is an unreachable goal, and mainly because there can and will never be a perfect being besides my beautiful lord and savior.

We are human, which makes us incapable of being perfect, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t strive to be our very best.

You make a fuck ton of money? Awesome! Now work towards getting in shape.

You’ve got a killer body? Amazing! Now find a faithful partner and build an amazing relationship.

You’re happily married with kids? Cool! Now work towards better managing your thought pattens and emotions.

There will always be things for us to work on.

Whether physically or emotionally, financially or spiritually, you should take action towards trying be better each and every day, even if it’s only 1% per day at first.

Strive to go deeper, and once you’ve gone as deep as you can- go wider. even if it’s only a couple inches.

There is always room for improvement somewhere. (And seemingly room for dick jokes everywhere LMAO)

So work for it, and reach your goals brobro! Stop and smell the roses from time to time. And once you’ve reached the mountain top- Enjoy your time looking at the view!

But life doesn’t stop.

The fact is that once you’ve become great at something, the goal is to maintain as much of that success as possible while upgrading yourself in other aspects.

That’s why there’s such a thing as people working full-time struggling to figure out a way to get AND stay in shape.

Because life is about trying to find balance in rocky waters. Life is about being resilient no matter what bullshit life throws at you.

And sometimes that means having to deal with some chaotic days man.

Them days where you go into work the day after hitting leg day for the first time.

(side note: to avoid as much soreness as possible (or completely remove it if you’ve been working out for a while already) make sure you stretch after the workout as well. Not the next morning, not right before your next workout- nah. stretch after the workout that same day as soon as possible. Trust you won’t have as much soreness as usual.)

Them days where you worked out too much and feel exhausted the next day.

It happens man it is what it is bro, but you have to keep going.

Those days where you feel like quitting are the days that build your character the most.

The days where you show up even after you felt like quitting are the days that make you feel like a badass motherfucker.

Those are the days that build futures; the days that build discipline; the days that fortify your mindset.

Lesson?

Don’t stay in one spot forever. Keep taking action one way or another. Fight back against complacency.

Even if shit gets hard dawg, you gotta keep going.

And when shit gets easy, go harder. Whether it’s on the same or different focus/task/mission as when you first started.

Go be great big dawg.

Stay blessed.

Talk to you soon,

Brandon Aguilera.
